Entebbe, Uganda:
Ugandan professional golfer Ronald Rugumayo made a strong start to the Pearl of Africa Golf Series at Entebbe Golf Club, carding an impressive 4-under-par 67 to finish the opening round in fifth position.
Rugumayo produced a composed and attacking display on the opening day, putting himself firmly within striking distance of the leaders with three rounds still to play.
Playing off a scratch handicap, Rugumayo's round featured one eagle, five birdies, nine pars and three bogeys.
He got off to a fast start, shooting 2-under-par 33 on the front nine, before matching that score with another 2-under-par 34 on the back nine to close at 67.
His biggest advantage came on the par-5 holes, where his scoring was significantly better than the tournament field average and provided valuable opportunities to pick up shots.
The performance underlined Rugumayo's ability to compete against a strong field featuring golfers from across Africa.
Rugumayo welcomes international competition
For Rugumayo, the significance of the Pearl of Africa Golf Series goes beyond his individual position on the leaderboard.
He says tournaments that bring together professionals from Uganda and other African countries provide local golfers with valuable exposure and a chance to measure themselves against a wider field.
Rather than Ugandan professionals competing primarily against one another in local tournaments, Rugumayo believes an event of this nature gives them the opportunity to test their game against international opposition.
The tournament also gives Ugandan golf fans the chance to watch golfers from different parts of Africa competing on home soil.
Three players share the lead
Rugumayo's 67 leaves him five strokes behind the joint leaders, with three players opening with 66s, five under par.
Uganda's Emma Ogwang of Entebbe Club leads the women's side after an outstanding opening round of 66. She carded six birdies, 11 pars and just one bogey, finishing with a 2-under-par 32 on the back nine.
Nigeria's Godwin Okoko, representing IBB International Golf and Country Club, also posted a 66. His round featured five birdies and 13 pars, including an impressive 4-under-par 32 on the back nine.
Uganda's Willy Kitata Deus of Entebbe Club completed the group on 66, also recording five birdies and 13 pars.
With the leaders separated by only a few shots and three rounds remaining, the competition remains wide open.
For Rugumayo, the task now is to build on his opening-round performance when Round 2 tees off tomorrow.
With his strong par-5 scoring and an opening 4-under 67 already on the board, the Ugandan star remains within reach of the leading pack as the Pearl of Africa Golf Series continues at Entebbe Golf Club.
